Sitting next to him in a comfortable chair would be some editor of Fortune magazine or one of the big journals in the industry. This is another level. And then she said, and this is a wonderful backhand compliment, she said, you know, after I played for you, I felt like a play for anyone. And Im looking at this thinking, you know, well this is all Ive done my whole life. Anson: Well, yeah, because basically Im listening to this guy and hes absolutely right. I think this is often where employees will interpret feedback in a negative way. He offers frank thoughts on topics such as leadership, galvanizing qualities of role models, principle-centered living, and how he helps his players transition into adulthood. Our test is the game we just played or the game we have to play next. I mean, I absolutely hate it. But heres the coolest thing about evaluating people with numbers. If you love those you teach, if you love those to coach, if you love those you lead, theyre going to feel it. So these kids Im coaching right now come from a culture where their parents think theyre Gods gift or whatever. And he believes in creating community, he believes in treating people exceptionally well. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. We had sort of a vague idea that in order to be effective you had to be great 1 v. 1, so we have 5 different 1-on-1 ladders. In fact the Lady Tar Heels have won 22 of the 36 NCAA soccer championships. It is an elusive holy grail in a way figuring out. Think about that for a second. He says, you know, when you do fire someone, they are going to hate you for the rest of their lives, but they dont want to work for you. You dont have to save everyone in your company. He also requires them to memorize the core value quotations and he tests them in front of the team and in every player conference. The first slide had the year 1969 on it. First of all, they get immediate feedback, but the other advantage is, they want to get to the top and they will know if theyre not pushing hard enough or working hard enough. The top three in my program ended up winning gold medals in the Olympics, and ended up winning world championships in the United States. The Core Values I. So I have also read that you sit down with your players once a year to kind of do an overall player evaluation. Emulating the core values of the Carolina Womens Soccer Team is a noble goal, indeed, and I strongly advocate them! Its not gonna work. And one of the things that really interested me the most about you, Anson, after reading about you and talking to Lindsay Henson here at Eagle Hill, and one of the phrases that she associates most with you and the team culture, was refuse to lose. Lindsay said refuse to lose really stays with her today, and not just as a memory, but really and truly as her mindset and how she shows up in all aspects of her life. And of course on the recruiting visit theyre on their best behavior. And I was thinking, this is incredible, because for years I tried to save everyone. actually neither that ancient, nor Chinese. You have to lead verbally. When I was a young coach, Dean Smith, the legendary former basketball coach at the University of North Carolina, who was Michael Jordans college coach. And sure enough, if all of your listeners would buy and read that book, theyre going to get a sense of what their moral imperative is. And you dont want them to blame anyone else. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. So youre doing them an extraordinary service.. And I called her up to sort of vet him. And I loved it. Thats your job, your job isnt to save people. And so I had all these ridiculous core values that I was expecting everyone to live by, but no one really lived by them except if it was a coincidence. They should be starting. And obviously continued success and. Every one of them has memorized that. And so I really appreciated that. Brodsky comes into Columbia. When we call them and ask them about the character of their kid, theyre not going to say oh my god, the kids toxic. One is the cauldron. Anson: I dont want to give speeches anymore. Anson: And she and I are good friends, and so Im going to work with her, and Im hoping through some of her psychological profiles she can sort out character because I would love to have that as a tool that I can use before a kid gets here. And this is one of the worlds great universities. His teams have won 21 NCAA DI National Championships since he founded the program in 1979. You just want to be the best on this team. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. Anson: And this will crack you up. And usually it blames someone else. All the different elements that are critical for our success in a practice and a game were recorded by the managers and then posted on the bulletin board. Maybe when you fire them theyre going to finally find an environment they love and youve actually helped them. Anson: please call me any time. Anson: So basically we have this hidden language the players know that Im using with the press thats designed to sort of protect them, but also designed to let them know theyre not good enough yet. Melissa: So its been fun for me because I went through the process, as I was getting ready for this interview I read about you and I watched some interviews that you gave, and I have to tell you I was positively blown away by your numbers. If you guys learn one thing from me today, make sure your HR person has incredible insights into hiring the right people because your HR person is going to determine whether or not your company is going to be successful or not. You cared about me and you still care about me. So how did you find and figure out what the right 28 categories were to be able to provide feedback on? Then he shifted the next slide, to 2012, the year we were in. The School of Government depends on private and public support for fulfilling its mission. And all of a sudden I saw this transformation that was phenomenal. And I was thinking, this is incredible. I have tried so many different ways to develop leaders. Now did we give them an opportunity to lead? The first slide he showed was all I needed, and here was the first slide. So now what we share is we share the top 4, we share their names and their ranks and everything, and then we share a one line statement not of where this girl ranks, but of where she is in the core values. No, no, no. And as impressive as that is, h Because I have tried to completely change someone and I havent. Theyll know if their preparation isnt good enough coming into the session. And the thing, whats interesting about reading all these books is what theyre all telling us is youve got to have a set of core values and youve got to live by them. They do not want to exert. And its often a sore subject, too. We are not going to go back to elementary school and memorize poetry for this man. I thought you wanted to sign a pro contract. All of Us Can Be Excellent. Anson: Its your mom and your dad. The top 10 are basically starters, the top 16 basically playing every game.The top five end up signing pro contracts. So please dont be confused about this man. No standards, no respect for authority. I want my kids to develop principle-centered living. And then sure enough, were following it, and it does. One of the most destructive things in athletics are the whiners. And so that sends a very positive message to the players as to what we value most. So what youve got to do is youve got to set them free. He has led his team to a 101-game unbeaten streak and coached 13 different women to a total of 20 National Player of the Year awards. Anson Dorrance is an American soccer coach. I want them to win gold medals in the Olympics. So if you want to develop elite athletes, you dont develop them in a recreational environment. And then he patiently waits for, you know, this self-righteous CEO to finish and then he basically calmly says, well, if youd taken that energy that you invested in your bottom performer and you invested that in your top performers, your bottom line would be better. Its the data. We had a sociologist, our preeminent sociologist on campus come to speak to us in 2012. Exactly right. Ill give you my favorite example. That wasnt good. Melissa: So how do you identify culture fit for your organization right now? It occurred to me you might find them refreshing as well. How do you find these new ideas? All of this has been done through the cauldron. But whats shocking to us is how often extraordinary talent never gets on the field. Now obviously I need verbal leaders. What have you found on the developing coaches side that maybe would, if I was a business owner out there thinking about how do I build my senior leadership team? And so I wish there were ways for me to sort out their character before I brought them in because that would have a huge impact on the kids we would end up offering scholarship money to. And so thats where we are right now. And youll appreciate this because youre a woman. anson dorrance 12 core values. Any advice to share on that front?
